 500% More Air!  500% Cooler!

Radium Incorporated (Radium) set out on a mission to develop the ultimate personal breathing and cooling system for the nuclear power industry worker. For decades, nuclear workers had no choice but to use respiratory protection products that starved them for air, were obstructive to use, and created an extremely hot and stressful environment to work. The Hurricane Hood™ line of products is the industry solution for a problem that has lingered long enough.

Radium’s experience in steam generator nozzle dam services played an important role in the development of the Hurricane Hood. One of the design goals was to develop a system that could be used by nozzle dam technicians to install or remove dams. It had to be a compact system that would not obstruct the technician from entering or exiting the channel head through a 16" steam generator primary manway and provide ample air flow. The Hurricane Hood Category 3 (CAT-3) is the solution.

Radium’s patent pending design started with utilizes a bubble hood which is currently used in the industry as the basis for the design. The problem with a bubble hood system is you need a very expense breathing air compressor system to use a bubble hood and it requires maintenance and setup of the system which time and unnecessary exposure to perform these tasks.

Next, Radium’s engineers modified and separated the components of a typical Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) because a standard PAPR would not allow a technician to enter the channel head due to the massive size of the battery pack/filter assembly. Separating and greatly improving these components offers several advantages.

  • 5 times more filtered air than a powered air visor or PAPR!
  • No Hoses!
  • Does NOT require air compressors, air filter banks, airlines, air support and monitoring personnel, piping and plumbing, and all of the maintenance that comes with a breathing air system. Save money and dose!
  • Optimized air flow path
  • Low cost of ownership
  • Each model's blower is interchangeable
  • Lasts up to 7 hours on one battery charge
  • Wireless color camera system optional
  • No obstructed views
  • Locking electrical connectors
  • User can access 16" vessel manway openings (CAT-3)
  • Batteries take 15 minutes to charge
  • Wear hard hats under the hood - CAT-2 only
  • Hydrate and keep cool with our Hydropack

Radium currently offers 2 different Hurricane Hood models. The Category 2 (CAT-2) is a backpack version of the CAT-3 and can be used for any application except for limited access areas that require the user to enter through a manway or access hole. Hard hats and any type of communications headsets can be worn inside the CAT-2 hood. The CAT-3 can be used for any application.

Some of the jobs that Hurricane hoods can be used include cavity decontamination, cavity seal table work, steam generator platform support, steam generator nozzle dam installation, control rod drive maintenance, and virtually any job that you need freedom from a hose/ breathing air system but need ample filtered air for cooling and breathing.
